Whew – okay so I’m super sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. The past few months have been a whirlwind. (Insert surprised face here – who’s life isn’t hectic?!) Does that ever happen to you? You get so caught up in the everyday of things that you forget to really see the bigger picture…and with that picture the time that slipped away so transparently. It’s actually terrifying and I try very hard not to let that happen. I found myself telling a young person the other day not to wish their life away because before they knew it they’d be working for the man or perhaps would be the man to work for but still – working…and the shine can wear off that real quick some days. (Or so I hear…I love my job!) But the moral of this story is that time flies people – and in turn my blog absence.
Anyway, with that revelation behind me we can now get down to business. Tile business. What’s to be expected for tile trends in 2017? While taking on a kitchen or bath reno can be very exciting – and it can also suck the wind right out of your sails. It’s important to make confident, concise selections that you’ll not only love for now but for later – we all know it takes deep pockets to keep up with revolving renovations which is why its key to do it right the first time. So here’s what to know in 2017.
Take it away Terracotta!
That’s right – you read correctly. Terracotta is making a resurgence! This trend centers on the quality of handmade items and their materials but in a clean and simple way. Picture warm tones like orange and saffron and not just on floors – think walls and ceiling too. True Terracotta!
TBT – ‘Throwback Tile’ – A re-introduction of Vintage tiles
Clearly this makes my heart sing! The hard lines that so often delineated contemporary design vs Vintage is being smeared to encapsulate the best of both worlds. For many years now we have seen the trend of purchasing older homes for their character and charm and introducing newer and fresher design perspectives into them. Now we can flip the script – building a new home but want to add a bit of old school charm? Do it with tile – the look is unsurpassed.
Heavy Hitters
Rich, saturated hues are making a comeback this year in 2017. Most noticeably is the diamond in the rough, the love of my life, yes – that’s right…EMERALD! These deep tones aren’t taking a
backseat either and should be expected to be seen in paint, fabrics, and tile applications.

Thinking outside of the Box
At the end of last year I told you to be on the lookout for the goodbye to chevron and herringbone tile installations. I could hear many of your hearts breaking but please know that creatively inspired tile layouts are still a thing in 2017. Take 3x10 subway tiles for instance. I have seen a serious sway in stacking these tiles vertically for a much more contemporary appeal to it.
Simply Marblelous

Holy Hannah Montana – I did not think that I would ever see the day considering how many homes I have been into in which we literally stood, stared and judged the pre-existing marble application a la EVERYWHERE that we were going to rip out. Marble is coming back with a vengeance. A 20 year, I run this town, Queen B kind of vengeance. Marble tiles are coming back in large format applications (Hail Mary!) and certainly are beautiful and sophisticated looking. However I do make this recommendation with caution – please note the longevity it took for Marble to make its way back around into the loving parts of our hearts again. Friends don’t let friends buy everywhere Marble. Marble is a commitment – make smart choices. (This was a PSA)
