Diary of a Designer Girl:
Before you Renovate your Kitchen

The realization of moving forward with a kitchen renovation is so much more than just the initial decision. While during this time homeowners can feel but excitement and stress relating to the adventure they are about to embark on. There are lots of things you want to ensure you consider before opening up your first wall or picking a cabinetry colour. This tip list will give you some insight into the steps to take prior to moving forward with your kitchen renovation.
Money Talks: Firstly – start out with a realistic budget. Your ideas may be lofty but sometimes your budget may not be and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! Putting forth a legit number with help both your contractor and designer find realistic ways to make your dreams a reality while staying within that fine line.
Currently Trending: What’s your style? With so many design ideas floating around the internet or in store it can be difficult to pin point what your true style is sometimes. Not to mention what won’t date itself in two years. While making all the decisions isn’t necessary (hello – that’s why I have a job) it’s great to give some thought into what you envision your space looking like at the finish line.
Dream Team: Researching a reliable contractor to complete your renovation is an incredibly important step before moving forward with any other selections. You want to feel confident that individual or team you select is trustworthy (come with references), skilled, and has the resources to complete the project they’ll be dealing with in the timeline they agree to.
Demo is Permanent: I really encourage and strongly stress the importance of
connecting with a skilled trade to divulge on your renovation wish list. While removing walls can certainly be accomplished in any aspect – it often doesn’t come without labour and a price tag. (Insert surprise face here) Consulting with a professional will allow you to see what’s what. Is there electrical that needs to be moved? Venting? Are you going to be dealing with trying to patch an older floor that may not be available? You want to have a game plan before you start a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g.
Tick-Tock: Timelines are one of the biggest thing to remember before you embark on your kitchen reno. You need to be realistic in the sense that your home will be under construction for a stretch up about 8 weeks. (If you are completing solely your kitchen reno) Your cabinets take time to be produced (unless you are going pre-fab) and construction is a process…and often messy. You also want to remember you won’t have a functional kitchen during this time – so appropriate planning for your lifestyle is recommended.
