Designer of a Diary Girl:

My Favourite Fall Memory

Fall? What’s Fall? If you live anywhere in Canada right now you are likely nodding your head yes right now as you know that we’ve been having an additional blast of Summer that I have affectionately named – September Summer. BUT before we know it – all the leaves will have Fallen and cute boots will be part of everyday attire and that got me thinking about my favourite parts of Fall.

I always get nostalgic around this time of year. Maybe it’s something about harvest time and the smell in the air that takes me back to my farm growing up or the annual roster of Fall fair’s swinging into motion…I can never pinpoint it but it’s always there.

When school goes back in session I first notice myself feeling the effects of the Fall change. I always remember what it was like to start a new year with all my friends and see what classes we had together and where our lockers were in position to one another. I loved going to school because I found it a social outlet more so in those days to be perfectly honest and it allowed me more freedom. Our town’s Fall fair was always the second week in September – so usually the first weekend after school started – so there were always SO many fun things going on that it was hard to not love this time of year. After this came the next social events of priority – like HOCO + Halloween parties!

At home – my Dad would be busy with farming when he came home from his 9-5. Some nights he’d out until midnight working in the fields just to get it all done…and I always loved that for some reason; the same way I loved getting off the bus after school seeing all our doors open and my Dad fully submersed in harvest mode. Maybe it was falling asleep to the smell of freshly combined beans and a cool breeze or maybe it was pride in my Dad’s undying work ethic despite having to do it all alone. I’m not sure there’s a word for that – a feeling you get for an appreciation you have for something in life that is already hard to define. I’ve always wondered that.

In life, I live for simple pleasures. Warm clothes out of the dryer and the smell of Vanilla candles are just a few of ways to my heart, but there will always be something about the way that the Fall seasonal change makes me feel. The way it holds so many memories and can instantly take me back – like time travel. That may be my greatest simple pleasure of all.
