Um...who doesn't love a surprise? Particularly when it involves the smallest and sweetest of beings...that's right you guessed it. Baby love! So many emotions paired with a list of to-do's and to-learn's that seems like it could never be tackled before the ETA of wonder baby. Not to mention you know - where they will sleep and essentially start their lives on this crazy place we call earth.

I thought today I'd share some tips, tricks and insight on how to achieve an effective gender neutral nursery scheme. With expectant mothers having so many things on the go already - if I can provide even a stitch of info that helps ease the process then I've done my job. Or you could also just call me...I'd also be okay with that!

Below I've put together a few guidelines to follow when embarking on your nursery navigation. Clearly everyone's tastes and preferences are different but keeping these items in mind before execution will be key to a successful end result. Side note - clearly you're baby will be the most beautiful aspect of the entire space but I do my best to achieve a full package ;)

1. Stay Neutral - Choosing a primary wall colour to base your room scheme off of is important. Neutrals today center around whites, off-whites, creams, grays and beige. Sticking within one of this colour families will allow you endless pairing possibilities with your additional decor. And in case you haven't noticed - grays are basically the new black. Mixing grays with white creates a chic look that even babies can dig!

2. Create a Gallery Wall - I don't think there is a better way to introduce art and wall decor into the nursery then with a gallery wall. Mix items like prints, word art and ornaments to achieve a layered look. These items are also great because you won't feel bad about changing them out as your little person grows.

3. Into the Jungle - Every child learns about their animals' and their ABC's as one of the first stepping stones in life. Why not introduce animal influences throughout your nursery space. Prints, textiles, lighting and decor are all great ways to introduce a neutralized theme.

4. Super soft + cuddly - Need I say more? Kids love soft things. They need soft things. Ensure your nursery entertains various textures and patterns throughout. (Ie: Area rug!)

5. Mix + Match - Utilize decorative items like baskets and bins that perhaps you're baby won't be able to appreciate off the hop but will be able to grow and transition with as time goes on. Looking to purchase items that can ease transition as the child grows is both cost effective and consistent.

6. Light but not Sterile - It's important to create a light and airy nursery space but not everyone can live with the starkness of lighter or even white walls. Turn to creams, beige's and grays to use on the walls and layer white and colourful items effectively through your furniture and decor purchases. A light, fresh room creates a neutral backdrop and makes it easier for mom and dad to keep wide eyed when doing their thing. Nothing encourages sleep like a dark, moody space.

7. Geometric - The perfect space to have fun and play with geometric's. Draperies and bedding with this feature add a dimensional aspect to the space.

8. Go big! - Used over sized artwork to style your little one's space. When trying to avoid gender specific colours it can be difficult to know which ones to include. Introducing a larger format piece of art that is bold and not colour specific adds a welcomed punch.

9. Antiqued - As mentioned above adding an area rug to your nursery space is probably on the top of your list unless you a carpeted space. If antiques are your thing then I recommend sourcing a great area carpet to add some dimension and texture to the room.

10. Wall Illustrations - Get creative with wall installations that can be easily removed later on. Decals are a cost effective and primarily easy DIY for parents. It also leaves endless options when it comes to pattern, design, or graphics!
